That blown transformer on Elm Street turned my whole week around

My Monday started with a power surge that fried my mixer and three racks of proofing dough. Turns out the transformer fire two blocks over reset the entire block's wiring, and the utility company cut me a check for $2,400 by Wednesday. Has anyone else had a utility screwup actually work out in their favor?

Yeah I was just reading about a guy in Ohio who had a similar thing happen with a blown substation. He got a check for his damaged appliances too, which is wild because you usually get stuck dealing with insurance for weeks. Still though I'd rather not have to replace my fridge and washer at the same time, even if the payout is decent.

The Ohio substation thing was paying out for appliances? That part is wild to me. Three years ago when a power surge took out our microwave and garage door opener, our electric company basically told us "tough luck." I still have the letter from them saying they weren't liable. So hearing that someone in Ohio just got a check for a whole fridge and washer setup makes me wonder what kind of deal their utility has.
