TIL my morning routine was wrecking my skin for years

I used to scrub my face with a rough washcloth every morning... thought I was getting it really clean. Then my dermatologist in Portland told me to stop and just use my hands with a gentle cleanser. After 2 weeks my redness went down and my breakouts stopped. I felt so dumb. Has anyone else had a skincare habit they thought was good but actually made things worse?

Tried using one of those gritty apricot scrub things every day back in college. My face looked like a tomato that got into a fight with a cheese grater. Took me way too long to realize scrubbing off half your skin is not the same as gentle exfoliation. My pores were just throwing a protest that I kept ignoring. Now I just splash water on my face and hope for the best, basically.
