Hit 1,000 sourdough loaves baked last week and my starter almost died the next day.

The number itself didn't surprise me honestly. What got me was how much starter I went through - about 50 pounds of flour just for feedings. Then my jar cracked on day 1,001 and I had to scramble to save enough to keep going. Almost lost a year of work over a cheap glass jar. Anybody else had a close call with their starter after hitting some random milestone?

Took your idea about cheap glass jars and started keeping a backup in a plastic deli container just in case. Learned that lesson the hard way when I dropped my main jar on a Tuesday and had to borrow some starter from a neighbor to get back on track.

Wait, you seriously didn't have a backup jar after all that advice? @grayh60, I learned that lesson the first time I cracked a jar on a tile floor and there went my whole week's start. Now I keep a backup in an old plastic yogurt tub and label it with the date I fed it last. Honestly, that neighbor save was lucky.
