I finally noticed my oven runs 50 degrees hot after 4 years of burnt bottoms

Was making a batch of sugar cookies for my niece's birthday last month and the bottoms kept coming out black while the tops were pale. Tried everything, different pans, rotating halfway, even moved the rack up. Finally grabbed a cheap oven thermometer from the grocery store and it read 425 when I set it to 375. How many cookies did I ruin before this? Anyone else found out their oven was lying to them?

People always want to blame the user first, but half the stuff in our houses is just built poorly or drifts over time. I've seen it with thermostats, bathroom scales, even the gas pump shutoff sensors. We just assume things are calibrated right from the factory and they almost never are. That cheap thermometer probably saved you a lot more frustration down the road too.

Respectfully, it's usually user error and not the oven that's wrong.
