Burnt my hand AND salvaged the cake in the same 5 minutes yesterday

I was pulling a triple-layer chocolate cake out of the oven and my oven mitt slipped, so I grabbed the hot rack with my palm and dropped the whole thing on the floor, but somehow the layers landed stacked and I iced it anyway with one hand wrapped in a wet towel. Has anyone else had a freak accident that somehow saved the bake instead of ruining it?

Did you ice it with a wet towel still on your hand? That's kind of legendary honestly. I've had oven mitts slip on me before but never that bad. Your palm must be killing you though, I hope you put some burn cream on it. The fact that the layers landed stacked is some kind of baking miracle, like the universe decided you deserved that cake. I'm sorry about your hand but also really impressed you finished the job one-handed. You earned every single bite of that triple layer chocolate cake.

So wait - you're telling me you grabbed a hot oven rack with your bare palm and kept going instead of dropping everything and running your hand under cold water for 20 minutes like a normal person? That's not a freak accident saving the bake, that's pure stubbornness disguised as luck. I've had burns before and the second that skin hits metal you don't think "let me finish icing this cake," you think "why do I exist." The layers landing stacked is impressive, sure, but I gotta ask - did you actually eat it knowing there was a solid chance floor crumbs were mixed in with that icing? Because I've dropped a cookie on the floor and still ate it, but a whole cake floor landing is a different level of commitment to not wasting food.

The burn cream tip is appreciated but you don't actually put cream on a fresh burn, you're supposed to run it under cold water first haha. I just soaked a towel in ice water and wrapped it up to keep working.
