My wife bet me $20 that the toothpick test was lying to me, and she was right
So I've been baking banana bread for maybe 6 years and I always did the toothpick thing, stick it in the middle, comes out clean, pull it out. My wife kept saying my loaves were gummy in the middle and I blamed the recipe. Two weeks ago she bet me 20 bucks that the toothpick was the problem. I finally caved and bought a $12 instant read thermometer from the grocery store and tested it. Toothpick came out clean at 185 degrees but the bread was still wet in the center. Once it hit 200 it was perfect, no gummy ring at all. I lost the bet but I've made 4 loaves since and every one came out right. Has anyone else ditched the toothpick for a thermometer, or am I late to this party?
