Overheard a guy at the farmer's market say you have to weigh ingredients for cookies or you're doing it wrong

I've been using measuring cups for 15 years and my chocolate chip cookies win the office bake-off every December. Has anyone else gotten perfectly fine results without the scale and felt like that advice is a bit overblown?

Are people really out here weighing their flour for Saturday morning chocolate chip cookies? I've been using the same dusty measuring cups since college and my coworkers fight over the last cookie every year. Sounds like one of those kitchen rules that sounds fancy but doesn't actually matter unless you're baking for a living.

Honestly @mason499, have you ever actually measured flour with a scale and then tried the same recipe with cups? Because I did once out of curiosity, and the difference in texture was legit noticeable - the weighed batch had way more structure while the scooped one came out denser. Ngl, if your coworkers are fighting over the cookies, you're clearly doing something right, but the science behind weighing isn't just for pros. It's about how flour packs down in a cup depending on humidity or how you scoop it, which is why bakers weigh it - it's not fancy, it's just consistent.
