Vent: That $7 Aldi sourdough starter kit was way better than my homemade attempt

I spent 3 months feeding my own starter and it never rose, but this dollar store packet made perfect loaves after 2 days. Has anyone else had a cheap mix totally outshine a from-scratch project?

Oh man, I had the same thing happen with a boxed yellow cake mix. I spent all day trying to make one from scratch and it came out like a brick, but the cheap mix was fluffy and perfect.

In my experience the store bought stuff is just way more dialed in. Less fuss and it actually works.
