Found a fully functional food scale for 50 cents at a yard sale last Saturday
I stopped by a random yard sale in a neighborhood I don't usually drive through. Guy had a box labeled 'random kitchen stuff' for 50 cents each. There was a digital Ozeri scale in there with the battery cover taped on. I figured it was busted but threw it in the bag anyway. Got home, put in a new battery, and it reads exactly to the gram. I've been using it every day for a week now to portion out rice and coffee. Has anyone else found something that works perfectly despite looking completely trashed?

Oh man, @grace_hunt84 you are 100% right about those plastic tabs. I actually had the same thought when I saw the tape. I peeled it back to check and sure enough, one of the little tabs was snapped clean off. I ended up using a tiny dot of superglue on the other side to hold it in place and now it's solid. That scale has been sitting in my kitchen for a week straight and I've been weighing out my oatmeal and coffee beans like a maniac. It's wild how something so beat up can still work like new.

That Ozeri scale is actually a solid brand, I've had one for years before it finally gave out on me. But here's my question for you: have you checked if the tape on the battery cover is actually holding it together or if it's just cosmetic? In my experience, those little plastic tabs break off pretty easily and then the cover just sits loose. If it's just taped on, you might want to throw some superglue on it before it falls off completely and you lose the battery door forever. Your mileage may vary but I've learned that lesson the hard way with a few different gadgets.
