Switched from spray to brush after a guy at the flea market called me out

I was at a flea market last month looking at old tools. Picked up a half-used can of wood stain for $2. Another shopper, older guy, saw me grab it and said "you're gonna spray that on with a can, aren't you?" I said yeah. He shook his head and told me I was wasting my time and the stain. He said on cheap finds like that, brushing gives way more control and uses less product. I was skeptical but tried it with a $1 brush from the same table. Worked way better on an old nightstand I was fixing up. No overspray, no uneven spots. Anyone else had advice from a stranger at a thrift store change how you do stuff?

my buddy steve got told the same thing at a habitat for humanity store but about paint thinner. some guy saw him buying a gallon of it and said "you gonna use that straight no gloves huh" and he was right. steve ended up with chemical burns on his hands cause he didnt listen. now he buys the expensive gloves every time.

Read somewhere that most chemical burns from household stuff happen because people think "it's just one time" or "I'll be careful." Guess Steve found out the hard way that careful doesn't cut it with paint thinner. That stuff eats through skin faster than you'd think, and gloves are cheap compared to a trip to urgent care.
