That $3 bread knife changed how I shop for kitchen stuff

Last Saturday I grabbed a beige bread knife from a church rummage sale in Toledo for $3. The handle was a little loose but the blade had that old-school serration. My neighbor stopped by while I was slicing a loaf and said, "Why do you keep buying new when the old stuff just works?" She was right. Now I check the weight and the feel before I even look at the price tag, and I've passed on five shiny new knives since then. Has anyone else had a cheap find that made you question the newer stuff?
