Warning: that $3 hand mixer from the dollar store almost set my kitchen on fire today

I saw this bright red hand mixer at Dollar Tree for three bucks and figured it was worth the risk for a single batch of cookie dough. Plugged it in, started mixing butter and sugar, and within maybe 45 seconds the motor started smelling like burning plastic. I pulled the beaters out to check and the little vent slots were actually smoking. Unplugged it quick and let it cool on the counter. The beaters bent a bit too, so the dough had uneven chunks anyway. Learned my lesson about cheap electronics that plug into a wall outlet. Has anyone else had a budget appliance actually catch fire or just get too hot to touch?

Just melt the plug off completely before tossing it in the trash.

Friend of mine had a similar dollar store blender that literally melted the cord after three uses. Scary stuff for sure, especially when you think it's just a cheap way to make cookies.
