DAE rethink clipless pedals after a 70 year old guy passed me on a hill in Portland
So I was grinding up this hill on my way home from work in Portland last Tuesday, and this older guy just cruises past me like it was nothing. He's on a beat up steel bike with flat pedals and regular sneakers, no fancy gear at all. At the next light I asked him how he makes it look so easy and he said he rode clipless for 20 years before his knees started bothering him, so he switched back to flats about 5 years ago. He said his times barely changed and he stopped falling over at stop signs, which honestly made me laugh. I've been on clipless for 3 years and never really questioned it, but now I'm wondering if I'm just doing it out of habit. The thing is, I do feel more connected on long rides, but his point about stop and go city riding stuck with me. Has anyone here switched from clipless back to flats for their daily commute, and did you regret it?
