My backpack pannier setup finally clicked after 3 rainy weeks

Honestly I spent months mocking folks who swore by panniers over backpacks, figured the sway and extra weight wasn't worth it. Then last March I did 14 miles round trip through Seattle drizzle with a soaked laptop and a sore lower back, so I borrowed a buddy's cheap set. Has anyone else found that switching to panniers made them slower but way less miserable, or did I just have a terrible backpack?
