My brother told me to skip the rain gear for my short commute, and I learned the hard way
He said, 'It's only a 15 minute ride, you'll dry off at your desk.' So I tried it one Tuesday morning when it was just drizzling. By minute five, I was soaked through to my underwear and spent the whole workday feeling like a damp sponge. That was three months ago, and I've used a cheap packable rain jacket every single ride since, even if the sky just looks a little gray. Has anyone else gotten terrible advice that you only needed one bad ride to correct?

Ever think some of that bad advice comes from people who don't actually ride much themselves? I've found that even a short ride in a real downpour can chill you to the bone, and being wet all day is miserable. A packable jacket is such an easy fix, it's wild to me to skip it.

Yeah that "chill you to the bone" thing is so real... I keep a cheap plastic rain poncho stuffed in my bag. It takes up no space and saves the whole day.

My brother once told me I didn't need gloves for a 10-minute ride because "your hands warm up after the first couple minutes" - yeah, no. Ended up with fingers so numb I couldn't unlock my front door, and @hernandez.miles is totally right about non-riders giving the worst advice. Took one miserable ride of fumbling with frozen hands to realize a pair of $5 liner gloves is the best thing ever (they live in my bag permanently now). So I'm with you on the packable rain jacket thing - being wet and cold is way worse than looking a little silly carrying a plastic coat.
