Rode with a rear rack for 3 weeks and my back feels better than it has in years
I usually carry my stuff in a backpack, but a guy at the bike co-op in Portland sold me a used rack for $15 back in March. I figured it would just keep my shirt from getting sweaty, which it did, but the bigger thing was that my lower back pain went away after about two weeks of riding to work that way. Turns out hauling 12 pounds off my shoulders made a bigger difference than I expected on my 4 mile commute. My question is whether panniers are really that much better than just strapping a bag to the rack with a bungee, since that is what I have been doing.
