Started leaving my pannier at the office overnight and my commute dropped 9 minutes
I bike 6 miles each way to work in Portland and always hauled a full bag with laptop, clothes, and lunch. Three weeks ago I got lazy and left my pannier at my desk by mistake, so the ride home was with an empty rack. Strava said I did the same route 4 minutes faster without even trying harder. Now I leave the bag Monday and only bring it home Friday, carrying just a small frame bag for keys and phone. The weird part is my knees feel better too, mostly on the uphill part on 12th. Anyone else split their gear between home and work like this, or am I the only one late to this?
This is the same thing that happens with anything you carry every day, you just stop noticing the weight. I switched to a smaller water bottle for my runs and shaved time off without changing anything else. Same with my backpack on hikes, dumped half the junk out and suddenly the hills felt flat. We just get used to hauling stuff around and forget it costs us. Your knees telling you the truth before your brain does is the real proof.
