Just realized I lost 6 months of my life waiting on subtitles to load before I found the fix

Waited way longer than 6 months on that one. The real issue is usually the subtitle file being out of sync or the video player defaulting to a bad track, not the subtitles being slow to load. Most of the time you just need to switch to the right file or set the delay in your player once and it sticks. Felt pretty dumb when I finally figured out my setup was doing that the whole time.
