Overheard someone call Stranger Things 'just 80s nostalgia bait' and it got me thinking

I was at a coffee shop last Tuesday and heard this guy tell his friend that Stranger Things was nothing but cheap throwbacks. He said it like that was a bad thing. But for me, those little details are what made me stick with it through season 2 when it got slow. I mean, the Dungeons and Dragons references and the mall stuff in season 3 actually felt like getting a time capsule from my older brother's room. Has anyone else found that the nostalgia stuff adds to the show or do you think it's just a crutch?
