Watching a documentary on old TV sets and learned something wild about 'The Simpsons'

It said they have a rule that Homer can only strangle Bart for exactly 3 seconds per episode. Found that in a behind-the-scenes feature on the show's early seasons. Anyone know other weird production rules from shows?

The old Star Trek shows had a strict rule about phaser settings. They could only use "stun" or "kill" to keep the action simple for the budget. It's a classic example of a production limit shaping the stories.

That rule was actually a myth, the writers confirmed it was never a real thing. I heard they just used it as a joke answer in interviews.

And then there's the whole "Homer never learns" rule they had for a while. He had to reset to his baseline stupidity by the end of each episode. I read that was actually written into an old writers' style guide for the show. Kept things consistent. Makes sense when you think about it, limits can force creativity.
