My farrier asked why I quench in motor oil and I have been thinking about it for two weeks
I was getting my horse shod out in Dripping Springs and the farrier, who has been doing this for 31 years, watched me pull a hot punch out of the forge and dunk it in a bucket of used motor oil. He didn't say anything mean, just asked why I picked oil over water. I said because that is what I saw on the internet when I started and it seemed to work. He told me he uses plain water and gets a harder face on his driving hammers, which surprised me since I always figured oil was the safe pick. So I went home and tested it with two pieces of 1080 stock, same heat, one in water one in oil. The water one skated a file off it and the oil one just bit and dulled the file. I have been running oil for 4 years and never once checked. Now I want to know if I have been leaving hardness on the table the whole time or if there is a reason folks avoid water on certain steels. Anyone here switch from oil to water and regret it?
