My first forge weld blew apart on the anvil, so I cut the whole billet back apart and started over from scratch

Was working on a damascus billet in the garage last Saturday and the weld didn't take on the third pass so it split right down the middle when I hit it, and I just cut it, ground it clean, and re-stacked it instead of trying to patch it, has anyone else had better luck fluxing with borax vs the commercial stuff?
