Old timer told me my anvil ring was dead, so I tried a chain wrap

I was at a hammer-in outside Columbus last Saturday and this greybeard says my anvil rings like a bell, but that's bad for the steel, he said the vibration kills the hit's energy... so I wrapped a heavy chain around the waist and it sounded dead but my forge welds seemed to set faster, honestly not sure if that's placebo... anyone else go back and forth between ringing and dead anvils, or am I just chasing old wives' tales?
