Warning: forging my first set of tongs took 3 weekends when I figured it would take one
I figured tongs were a beginner project, so I ordered a pair of 5/8 inch reins and thought I would knock them out in an afternoon. Three weekends and about 11 hours of forge time later, I finally had a set that would actually hold a hot billet without slipping. The hard part was the rivet. My first two tries either locked the jaws shut or let them flop open, and I burned through 3 blanks before I got the fit right. A guy named Dale at my local club told me to fit the joint loose and let the rivet peen do the work, and that finally fixed it. Now I look at tongs in catalogs and just laugh at the price. How long did your first pair take, and did you forge the reins or buy stock?
