Just switched my mind on expensive pocket knife steels after this one incident

Used to think spending $80 extra on a high-end blade steel was dumb, but my job knife hit a buried wire and barely rolled the edge while my buddy's cheap blade chipped out 4mm. Has anyone else had a mid-range steel surprise them like that?

The whole "barely rolled the edge" vs "chipped out 4mm" thing lines up with what I read about toughness being more important than raw hardness for real world use. Makes you wonder why anyone bothers with those super hard brittle steels.
