Serious question: do you thin out your collection or keep the one that got you started?
When I got into custom knives around 2016, I saved up for 11 months to buy a plain Little River from a maker in Asheville. No fancy steel, no wood inlay, just a clean working blade. Six years later I had 14 knives in the drawer, and my wife finally asked why I needed more than one. So I sat down and picked out two to sell, and the Little River was almost one of them. I took it out to the porch to clean it up for photos, and the thing flipped open like it still had the same snap from day one. I put it back and sold the two I had bought later instead. Now I wonder if I should have thinned more. If you have a starter piece like that, did you keep it or let it go? And did you ever regret either call?
Keeping the starter piece is a mistake more often than people admit. The memories are doing the talking, not the knife. That Little River sat in a drawer for years while your other blades actually got used. Get rid of it and put the money toward something you will carry every day. The story lives in your head either way, it does not need to live in your pocket.
