Warning: a knife maker at a Portland flea market flipped my take on old blazers
I always figured vintage blazers and custom knives were two separate hobbies that just happen to share a forum. Then two weeks ago I was at a flea market in Portland digging through a bin of old wool jackets when a guy selling handmade slip joints next to me started chatting. He pointed at a beat up navy blazer I was holding and asked why I wanted it if the fit was off. I said the fabric was nice, and he told me a good jacket is like a good blade, you buy it for the steel and the shape, not the label. That hit me harder than it should have. I ended up passing on three jackets that day and instead spent $60 on getting one re tailored to my shoulders. Now I look at every piece the same way, does the build actually work or am I just chasing a name? Curious if anyone else here started judging their jackets by knife rules after a random chat.
