I finally got my non-gamer neighbor to play a full game with us
Three years ago, I moved in next to a guy who thought board games were just Monopoly. Last week, after a year of casual chats about my game nights, he agreed to try one. We played a full game of Ticket to Ride on my back porch, and he actually asked when we were playing again. What's a good next step for someone who liked the simple rules but got into the map planning?

Carcassonne is the perfect next move. It has that same simple turn structure but the map building gets way more strategic as you play. My group still argues over farmer placement.

Carcassonne is a solid choice but fair warning, that farmer scoring system made me feel like I needed a math degree my first few games. I ended up just placing meeples randomly and hoping for the best, which is basically my strategy for everything in life. At least with Ticket to Ride, my terrible planning just meant I took the scenic route across the country instead of accidentally putting people in fields forever. Your neighbor will probably catch on way faster than I did though, that's a low bar to clear.
