Just realized I was wrong about teaching new players the complex rules first
Someone at my meetup in Chicago said I was scaring people off by explaining every edge case before we even started, and after I watched two newbies quit halfway through a game of Terraforming Mars last Saturday, I finally got why keeping it simple works better, right?

Keep it light and fast. Teach just enough to start playing.

Honestly, this take is spot on. I remember my buddy Mike tried learning sax from some massive method book and quit after two weeks because it felt like homework. But then his teacher just showed him three notes and a simple blues riff, and he was hooked. That first session should feel like playing, not a lecture. @jasons63 gets it, you gotta hook them before you drill them.
