Storing games vertically vs flat changed my shelf space problem
I have about 60 board games crammed into a standard 4 shelf bookcase in my basement. Last month I tried standing them all upright like books instead of stacking them flat. Gained back two entire shelves worth of space without damaging any boxes. Has anyone else found a storage trick that worked better than they expected?

Used to think vertical storage was just asking for everything to slide down and get crushed... tried it with my copy of Gloomhaven and was sure it would wreck the box but nope, holds up fine actually. My Terraforming Mars used to get crushed under a stack of heavier games like Scythe, now it just sits there nice and tidy. Even the flimsy FFG boxes like Arkham Horror LCG expansions stay straight without bowing out. Totally changed how I look at shelf space, not going back to stacking.

Well I'll be. I've been stacking games flat for fifteen years like some kind of caveman. The Gloomhaven thing really gets me - that box weighs a ton and if it can stand upright without caving in, then any game can. @dixon.ryan makes a good point about the FFG boxes too, those things are basically cardboard envelopes pretending to be game boxes. Guess I'll be spending my Saturday reorganizing the whole shelf instead of actually playing anything.
