TIL that my group's 'analysis paralysis' fix was making things worse

Last month at our Wednesday game night, a newer player told me our 30-second timers for turns were making everyone tense and quiet. She pointed out that the rulebook for Wingspan recommends letting people think, not rush. I dropped the timer and we had way more fun, even though games run about 20 minutes longer now. Has anyone else found a house rule that backfired like that?

Same thing happened in our D&D group when we tried a two-minute sand timer for combat turns.

Wait, did your group just freeze up or did it actually speed things up? We tried the same thing in our group (we have a few players who take forever to decide) and it was a disaster. People started skipping their actions just to avoid the timer pressure, so our epic fights turned into "I hit the goblin, done." We had to ditch it after three sessions because everyone hated feeling rushed, you know?
