Warned my Tuesday game group about the 'friendly' house rule that cost us 3 hours
Last week at Dave's place in Portland we tried a house rule where anyone could trade resources during another player's turn in Catan, and by hour two we had 4 people arguing over a single sheep card. I finally pulled out my phone, set a 2 minute timer for each trade window, and we finished the game in 40 minutes instead of the usual 3 hours. Now Dave wants to make the timer permanent but two guys think it kills the fun of table talk. Has anyone else had a house rule almost wreck game night, and how did you fix it?
A buddy of mine in Austin runs a monthly board game night and he read somewhere that trade timers cut game length by more than half. He tried it and yeah, same thing happened. Game went from dragging all night to done before 9. His group fussed for the first two weeks because they missed the back and forth talking, but then they started doing all that stuff between turns instead. The timer didn't kill the table talk, it just moved it. Dave is right that the fun part matters, but four people fighting over one sheep card is not the fun part. Try the timer for a few more weeks before anyone decides.
