Why does everyone call it a 'gate' when there's no actual gate involved?

I was at a con in Columbus last weekend and heard three different people describe the 'gate issue' in some old game rules. But the thing they were talking about had nothing to do with a physical gate or entrance. It was just a weird rule that caused a bottleneck. Am I the only one who thinks we should just say 'rule problem' instead of trying to sound fancy? What do you call those weird rule spots in your group?

Have you tried calling them "bottleneck rules" instead? lol That's what my group uses when we run into that kind of thing. It's way simpler and everyone gets it right away.

Oh man, that's genius, calling it a bottleneck totally paints the picture of everything backing up!
