Wingspan is a better teaching game for new folks than Catan and I will die on this hill
My sister in law sat through a 2 hour Catan game in March where she got blocked into a corner and never took a turn that mattered, and she has not touched a board game since. I ran her through Wingspan at our place last month and she was asking to play again the same night. The difference is that even when you are losing in Wingspan you are still doing something on your turn, so who else has swapped out a gateway game because the old one was quietly killing your group?
Honestly Catan has this thing where if your numbers dont hit you just sit there watching everyone else play and that is brutal for a new person. My buddy brought his girlfriend to game night and she rolled garbage for an hour straight and I could see her checking out. Wingspan at least gives you eggs and cards and little stuff to do every turn so it never feels totally dead. Tbh I still keep Catan around but it is not the first thing I pull out for new folks anymore. That hill is a good hill to die on.
