Got told I was burning through tips too fast by an old hand in Gary
I was working a boiler repair job outside Gary last month and this retired guy walked over to watch. He pointed out I was using way too much heat on the welds and said I was ruining the metal. Has anyone else had to unlearn bad habits from rushing too much?

Yeah but sometimes that old timer's advice is just outdated and slow. If you're getting the job done solid and not having callbacks, then burning through tips a bit faster just means you're efficient and actually putting in work.

The thing is, rushing is kind of a disease in our whole culture now, not just with welding. I've noticed it with cooking, driving, even just talking to people. Everyone's in such a hurry to get to the finish line that they skip the steps that actually make the end result good. Your old hand was probably trying to save you from that same trap, because once you learn to take your time, the speed comes naturally anyway. Take it with a grain of salt, but I've seen a lot of people burn themselves out working fast instead of working smart.
