Had a flange weld fail on a shutdown job in Gary, Indiana
We were doing a full pressure vessel inspection on a Tuesday morning. The old weld on a 12-inch steam flange just gave way during the hydro test, right at the root. The foreman, a guy named Carl, had me grind it all out and showed me his trick with a tighter arc gap on the first pass. I've been using that method ever since. Anyone else pick up a small trick from a failure that stuck with you?

Wait, it failed during a hydro test? That's terrifying.

Forget picking up tricks from failures, that's a bad way to learn. You shouldn't be waiting for something to break to get better. A good welder should know the right procedure from the start, not rely on some foreman's personal fix after a blowout. That just shows the original work wasn't done to spec. Relying on these little "tricks" people pass around is how you get inconsistent work and more failures down the line. Stick to the book and do it right the first time.

I used to chase those shortcuts, but you're right. The book exists for a reason, and sticking to it saves everyone a headache later.
