Old-school firebrick vs. castable refractory - what's your go-to?

I had to reline a furnace last month and decided to try castable refractory instead of my usual firebrick setup. Sounded great on paper but the stuff cracked after just a few heat cycles and I ended up tearing it out anyway. Any of you guys had better luck with castable or do you stick with brick for the long haul?

Castable always looks like the smart choice until you actually use it. It's like buying a fancy new tool that promises to do everything but ends up cracking under real heat. Firebrick is boring and heavy and takes forever to cut, but it just sits there and does its job for years. That's the thing with most quick fixes nowadays. People want something that pours out of a bucket instead of taking the time to lay brick properly. I've watched the same pattern play out with concrete slabs and even pizza ovens. Shortcuts always cost more time in the end.

I've used both and honestly I think people overhype the firebrick thing. Sure if you're building a forge that hits 2500 degrees every day then yeah go brick. But for a backyard pizza oven or a small kiln that sees weekend use? I've had castable hold up fine for like 4 years now with zero cracks. Maybe I just got lucky or maybe people mix it wrong or don't cure it right. Not saying brick is bad but the whole "shortcuts always cost more" thing feels a bit dramatic. Sometimes the shortcut works and saves you a ton of back pain.
