Old timer at Local 647 told me my bevel was all wrong...
I was laying out a header flange for a pressure vessel last Tuesday and this guy with 30 years on me walks over and just says "your land is too long, you're gonna get sick welds." Turns out I was running a 3/16 land on 1/2 inch plate when I shoulda been at 1/8 for the root pass. Changed my whole approach to prep, now I check my bevel angles twice before I even strike an arc. Anyone else get called out by a grizzled vet and actually learned something from it?

That 1/8 land on 1/2 inch plate is more forgiving for the root pass, I'll give him that. But some guys swear by a slightly longer land if you're running a hot enough amp to burn it in proper (especially on vertical up). Good on you for taking the advice though, most old timers have earned their stripes even if they sometimes oversimplify things.

The real trick is finding that sweet spot where the land matches your heat. Too many guys get locked into one number and never adjust for the material.
