Old timer showed me a fit-up trick on a steam drum in Gary

Last month I was on a prep job at a plant near Gary and this guy with 30 years in watched me struggle with a gap on a tube sheet for like 20 minutes. He walked over, grabbed a piece of angle iron and a come-along, and had it pulled dead tight in under five minutes without saying a word. I mean, I've done fit-ups before, but he made it look so simple, has anyone else picked up a move like that from a veteran that just stuck with you?
