Picked up a trick about testing tube sheets from a guy in Gary, Indiana

I was on a shutdown job near Gary last month and an old-timer showed me how he checks for tube sheet cracks using just a simple dye and a blacklight. He said most guys skip this step because it adds an extra hour per bundle, but he found three hairline fractures in one pass that would have failed hydro. Has anyone else run into problems skipping that dye check?

Ray's right that it's cheap insurance unless your boss is breathing down your neck for the schedule.

I read something online about a guy in Texas who said the same thing. He claimed skipping the dye check saved him time on one job, but then a crack opened up during hydro and made a mess of everything. Seems like that extra hour is pretty cheap insurance if you ask me.
