Serious question, did your journeyman tell you to stop chasing pinholes with the stinger?
Had a guy on a tank job in Gary tell me to quit running the stinger over pinholes and just grind them out instead. I argued with him for 20 minutes because I figured more wire was faster than more grinding. Turns out he was right, the pinholes I chased kept opening back up and the ground ones held on the same test. So now I am wondering if grinding is always the move or if it depends on the base metal. What do you all do when you hit a pinhole, grind it or burn it in?
Grind it out every time on carbon steel because a pinhole is usually porosity sitting under the surface, and burning over it just traps the junk in there. That trapped gas is exactly why your pinholes kept popping back open on the same test, the wire seals the top but the root is still bad. What base metal were you on in Gary, was it straight carbon or were you into some alloy?
