Showerthought: that "expensive" $300 welding hood I scoffed at for 2 years actually saved me $500 in burned time and bad beads on a big boiler job last month.
I borrowed my buddy's top-of-the-line hood for a 3-day tube repair in Houston and realized I was fighting shadows from my old $80 model the whole time - has anyone else been shocked by how much a good hood changes your actual welding speed?

Saw a thread on a welding forum where a guy tracked his reburn rate dropping from like 15% to 2% after he switched to a decent autodark. Made me think twice about what I was blaming on my shaky hands.

Oh come on, "dropping from like 15% to 2%" after a helmet swap? That's way too perfect. I've been welding for years and I still get bad welds no matter what hood I'm wearing. Those forum stories are usually people who just got better at their technique over time and gave the helmet all the credit. A nice autodark helps you see the puddle a little better but it's not gonna fix your arc length or travel speed.
