Switched from 6010 to 6011 root passes on rusty pipe, am I crazy or is this actually better?
Been running 6010 for open root passes on pipe for about 8 years now, always had decent luck but fighting porosity on the rusty stuff. A welder named Dale over in Gary, Indiana told me to try 6011 on the dirty joints and I've done maybe 40 passes since, and honestly the arc is way more forgiving on the mill scale. Problem is two old hands at my shop swear 6010 gives a cleaner bead and better penetration and they won't touch 6011 with a ten foot pole. I know the rod specs are close but the feel is different, and I'm not sure if I'm just getting lucky on these particular joints or if 6011 is a real option for root work. Anyone here run one over the other on a long stretch of pipe and notice a real difference, or is this one of those things that's 90 percent technique and 10 percent rod?
