That one time I quit using soap on my hoods and my boilouts got way easier
I was fighting with caustic residue for months after every hood boilout, always had to scrub twice. Then a old timer at the Local 74 hall in Hammond told me to stop using soap altogether, just hit it with a wire cup and water first. Tried it on a set of 10 hoods last Tuesday and the crud peeled off like butter. First pass took me 45 minutes instead of 2 hours. Has anyone else ditched detergent for straight mechanical cleaning on heavy buildup?

Yeah I stopped using soap on hood filters about two years ago after ruining a batch with caustic residue left behind. Just hot water and a pressure washer at 1800 PSI does the job on 95% of the buildup. For the really baked on stuff I hit it with a grinder and a wire wheel first. Saves me about 30 bucks a month on chemicals and I don't have to worry about any soap smell left in the hoods after.

Yeah wire wheel is the move for sure. I don't even bother with pressure washers half the time. Just a scrub brush and elbow grease.
