Warning: the 1/16 inch root gap rule bit me on a 2 inch heavy wall header
I was flipping through an old NBIC code book at the union hall in Gary last Tuesday and found out the standard root opening on a 2 inch heavy wall butt joint is tighter than I'd been running it for 3 years. I'd been setting gaps by eye off a 3/32 rod and wondering why I kept getting suck back on the root pass. Ran two test coupons with a 1/16 gap and a 1/8 land and the difference on the bend test was night and day. Any of you running heavy wall ever switch your gap based on wall thickness instead of just rod size?
