A conservator at the Cleveland workshop said my grain direction was backwards on 12 books, so I redid every spine
About 7 months ago I brought a batch of 12 rebinds to a conservation workshop in Cleveland to get a second opinion. The woman running it flipped one book over, ran her thumb down the spine, and asked if I had glued up against the grain. I had. She said it would crack at the hinge within a year and asked me to flex the board so I could feel it. She was right, it felt stiff in the wrong way. I went home and pulled all 12 spines off, which took two weekends, and reset them with the grain running head to tail. My hinge creases have held flat since, and I now run a thumbnail test on every board before it gets pasted down. Does anyone here check grain before cutting boards, or do you trust the feel of the sheet?
