I finally switched from PVA to wheat paste on a library repair job after a bindery buddy called my spine linings brittle
A guy named Marcus at the book arts meetup in Ann Arbor said my PVA linings were "cracking like old paint" on a 1950s encyclopedia set I brought to show. Half of me thinks PVA is fine if you work fast and don't lay it on thick, and half of me sees his point now that three spines have opened back up. Switched to wheat paste for the last 12 books and the hinges flex way better, but I miss the grab PVA gives you. Which side are you on, is PVA getting a bad rap or should I stick with paste for repairs?
Man, I read a piece from a conservator who said PVA works fine for cases and spine linings but gets stiff over time. Mixing a little paste with your PVA gives you the grab and the flex, so why pick a side at all?
