Spent two years pressing signatures with a cheap iron and ruined a first edition before figuring out it was the moisture
I was casing in a copy of a 1940s poetry book last week and the spine board just popped off after a day, so I took the whole thing apart again to see what went wrong. Turns out I had been skipping the step where you dampen the spine before pressing, thinking a dry press would keep the glue from warping the boards. My old boss at the bindery in Portland used to keep a spray bottle of water next to her press and I always thought it was for the paper, not the mull. Now I mist the spine cloth lightly and let it sit under weight for an hour before I ever touch the cover, and the boards are sitting flat. Has anyone else had luck with a specific spray bottle setting or do you just eyeball it?
