That $8 book press from a garage sale cracked my spine clean off

Last Tuesday in Portland I used a cheap wooden press I got 3 years ago and the hinge joint snapped so loud it scared my dog, so check any press older than a decade for hidden dry rot before you clamp a rare edition in it, has anyone else had a failure with salvage gear?
