Always thought a cheap grow light was fine until my friend's setup doubled my basil yield

I used a $30 panel from a hardware store for my indoor herbs for about two years. My plants were okay, but never great. Then my friend showed me her plants under a proper full-spectrum LED light she got for her birthday. The difference in just three weeks was huge. My basil under her light grew twice as much as mine, with darker leaves and stronger stems. It wasn't just about brightness, the light quality actually mattered. Has anyone else made a switch like that and seen a real jump in growth?

Yeah, that's the exact same trap I fell into. Used a basic shop light for ages and just accepted my sad little herbs as normal. Switched to a decent grow light for some peppers last year and it was like flipping a switch. The plants just looked healthier, you know? Thicker stems, way more leaves, the whole thing. Makes you realize how much that cheap light was holding them back.

Totally get what you mean about the light making all the difference. I was reading an article that said a lot of those basic lights just don't have the right color spectrum, even if they look bright to us. Plants need specific blues and reds to really grow strong instead of just stretching out. It's one of those things you don't know until you see the results for yourself.

My aunt tried growing tomatoes in her basement with those weak clamp lights. They got all leggy and fell over before they even flowered. She was so confused until a gardening friend asked about her setup. What are you growing under your new light?
